- This is an effort to
save the last Hungarian restaurant in New Brunswick.
- The Chardas has been
located on the corner of Plum and Somerset Streets for the last
80 years and has provided fine Hungarian cuisine to many happy
satisfied customers.
- The City of New Brunswick
wants to relocate the Chardas for the benefit of RWJ's expansion
efforts. If this happens, it may not be able to stay in business
any longer.
- To ensure the continued
enrichment of one of the oldest ethnic cultures in New Brunswick,
we strongly believe that the
area of Somerset
Street from Division to Bethany Streets should be declared an
historic Hungarian district. This small section of Somerset Street
contains several Hungarian churches, the Hungarian-American Athletic
Club (HAAC), the Hungarian Scouts building, the Hungarian Heritage
Center, and the Chardas restaurant. We need to preserve what
is left of our Hungarian heritage now, before it is too late!
